How to connect to a network PC from an Apple

I made this page because I need help satisfying my file sharing needs and was hoping a tech saavy person would read this:

So if someone has shared their awesome mp3 and movie collection on the network I used to easily be able to access it when i still had my PC by going to Run: \\nameofuser How do I do this on a Mac? From googling, I figured out that I could go to the finder and connect to server and then type smb://ipaddressofthepc/nameofuser

but when i did that, it made me type a username and password.
