The Berkshire Food Project, started by Williams students in the 1980s, continues to fight local hunger by preparing and offering free lunches on weekdays. Rather than being an impersonal handout, the Project aspires to be a community forum where people of widely different ages and circumstances can meet one another in an atmosphere of friendliness and mutual respect. Unlike typical soup kitchens, clients are seated and served restaurant-style, and once the meal has been placed down, volunteers sit down to share lunch and conversation with the clients.
BFP is located at the [[First Congregational Church|http://maps.google.com/maps?f=d&saddr=880+main+st,+01267&daddr=42.698081,-73.109894&hl=en&geocode=&mra=dme&mrcr=0&mrsp=1&sz=15&sll=42.70133,-73.115087&sspn=0.018765,0.04549&ie=UTF8&z=15]First Congregational Church] in North Adams. Every Monday through Friday, BFP begins cooking at 9:00am and serves lunch at noon. Volunteers-- whether coming alone, with a friend, or in a group-- are always welcomed.
Volunteers should contact in advance if seeking transportation.
