Newell Garfield is the beloved grandson of James R. Garfield, class of 1885, great nephew of Harry Augustus Garfield, class of 1885 and the 9th President of Williams College, and the great-grandson of President James A. Garfield, class of 1856, for whom Garfield House is named. Newell House was named in his honor in 1972.
