    William the Conqueror gave Mashamshire to one of his captains, Nigel de Albini. Nigel gave land to son Roger de Mowbray, who was captured in the Crusades. The Templars rescued Roger, and in return, he gave them control of the church in Masham. The Archibishop of York, not wanting the bother of administrating such a remote church, freed Masham of the customs and claims of his archdeacons and officials. In order to run he church, the Peculier Court of Masham was formed. (Peculier comes from the French word for "Particular") The Theakston Brewery in Masham named their product after this bit of history.
