PINE is a way of checking your e-mail using the "command line" rather than a web browser. Highly popular Unless you are a *nix nerd (who thus already knows the intricacies of PINE, and is probably running the standard way for students to check their e-mail in the pastlatest nightly build of Alpine on his MINIX box), it has since decreased in usage and popularityis utterly pointless. This article exists merely as an anachronistic reference to bygone days.  The last class to use PINE more than the web-based IMP was the [[Special:Category:Class_of_2004|Class of 2004]]. Why it took otherwise intelligent Williams students until then to realize that other forms of retrieving e-mail are vastly superior in both functionality and ease of use is a mystery.
